The 1000 metres, 1 kilometer run, or 1K run is an uncommon middle-distance running event in track and field competitions. It consists of two and a half laps around an outdoor 400 m track, or five laps around an indoor 200 m track. The 1000 yards, an imperial alternative, was sometimes also contested. Noah Ngeny
Noah Kiprono Ngeny (born 2 November 1978) is a Kenyan former athlete, Olympic gold medalist at 1500 m at the 2000 Summer Olympics, and world record holder in the 1000 m. He also ran the second-fastest mile ever. Career Noah was born in the Uasin Gishu District in Kenya. Nelly Jepkosgei (born 14 July 1991) is a Kenyan-born female middle-distance runner who specialises in the 800 metres. Career She originally competed for Kenya, running at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics and the 2011 All-Africa Games, but now competes for Bahrain. A dispute between the national bodies resulted in Jepkosgei being ineligible to run for Bahrain until March 2021, and she failed to represent her nation of birth at the 2019 African Games, despite being selected. She holds personal bests of 1:58.96 minutes for the 800 m and 4:00.99 minutes for the 1500 metres. She also holds the Kenyan national record for the 1000 metres with her time of 2:35.30 minutes. Letitia Vriesde
Letitia Alma Vriesde (born 5 October 1964) is a former track and field athlete from Suriname, who specialised in the 800 metres but was also successful over 1500 metres. She is the first (and to date, only) sportsperson from Suriname to compete at five Olympic Games. She won a silver medal at the 1995 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships. Vriesde holds the South American records for the 800 metres, 1000 metres and 1500 metres (indoors and outdoors) and also for the 3000 metres (indoors). Joaquim Cruz
Joaquim Carvalho Cruz (born 12 March 1963) is a Brazilian former middle-distance runner, winner of the 800 meters at the 1984 Summer Olympics. He is one of only ten men, and in August 1984 became the second man, to run the 800 metres in less than 1 minute 42 seconds. Biography Joaquim Cruz was born in Taguatinga, Federal District. The son of a steel worker, he began running as a 13-year-old, and showed great promise as a junior. At the age of 15 his personal best over 800 m stood at 1:51 min. After setting a junior world record of 1:44.3 min in 1981, he received a scholarship for the University of Oregon in 1983. The move immediately paid off, and Cruz won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships over 800 m that same year. Abbey Caldwell (born 3 July 2001) is an Australian middle-distance athlete. She is the current national champion in the 800 metres and holds the Oceanian record in the 1000 metres. Jeff Riseley
Jeffrey "Jeff" Riseley (born 11 November 1986 in Dandenong) is an Australian middle-distance athlete. Riseley competed in the 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics. Early years Riseley was seven when he began to participate in athletics. His family encouraged him as it would enable him to meet other children after the family had moved house. Riseley joined the under 8's at Dandenong Little Athletics and competed until he was 12. He lost interest but then returned to athletics in Year 11 in High School. Just before he turned 19, Riseley ran 1:52.7 for the 800m and in 2006 he clocked times of 1:49.0 for 800m and 3:48.91 for 1500m. Within 12 months, he ran times of 1:46.35 (800m) and 3:38.56 (1500m). Marco Arop (born September 20, 1998) is a Canadian track and field athlete competing in the middle distance events. Arop is the reigning world champion in the 800 m, winning gold at the 2023 World Athletics Championship, after winning bronze the previous year at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. He was the first Canadian to win a world championship in the 800 m. Arop was also the 2019 Pan American Games champion in 800 m.
